General FAQ

What is Heartland Film?

Heartland Film is a nonprofit arts organization founded in 1991 in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA with the mission to inspire filmmakers and audiences through the transformative power of film.

Heartland Film is a curator and supporter of purposeful filmmaking, honoring a wide variety of cinema and awarding storytellers from all over the world. The films we select and exhibit – whether they inspire and uplift, educate and inform, or have the ability to shift audiences’ perspectives on the world – all have one thing in common: they are entertaining films that do more than just entertain.

Heartland Film is comprised of three main program areas: the Heartland International Film Festival, the Indy Shorts International Film Festival, and the Truly Moving Picture Award.

What is the format for HIFF 2021?

Given the current state of the world this year, and because the safety of our audiences, filmmakers, staff, and volunteers, we’ve decided to continue with a hybrid format again this year. We've partnered with Eventive to create a virtual film festival – 145 new and exciting narrative and documentary feature films, on-demand from the comfort of your home.

We understand that film festivals are a fantastic reason to get out of the house and watch a movie where it was meant to be seen – on the big screen. Fortunately, thanks to our friends at Living Room Theaters, Kan-Kan Cinema and Brasserie, Newfields, and the Indianapolis Art Center, we’re able to make that happen too! Over our festival’s run, we will be hosting 11 nights of screenings at these venues.

Masks are required for all audience members, regardless of vaccination status, in all indoor venues (except while actively eating and drinking).

Is there a downloadable version of the festival guide?

Yes! CLICK HERE to view, download, and/or print the PDF version of this year's festival guide. In addition, print guidebooks are available beginning Thursday, September 30th at our venues - Living Room Theaters, Kan Kan Cinema, the Indianapolis Art Center, Newfields, and The Historic Artcraft Theater in Franklin.

Where can I purchase Heartland Film merchandise?

During the festival, merchandise will be available at the Box Office at each of our venues. Each venue will have its own unique color of each item, so visit all of our venues to collect the whole set! Sizing may be limited, so buy your keepsake early! Heartland Film Members get 10% off of retail prices. After the festival has concluded, you can click HERE to purchase our rad new designs at our new online store!

How do I make a donation to Heartland Film?

You have the option to add a donation when you purchase tickets or a fest pass, or you can make a separate`contribution HERE

As a non-profit arts organization where ticket sales account for less than 20% of our annual operating costs, we greatly appreciate any and all contributions to help us continue our mission to inspire filmmakers and audiences through the transformative power of film.

How do I get involved as a sponsor or partner?

Please contact our Director of Development Michael Ault (mault@heartlandfilm.org) and/or Development Coordinator Heather Ross (hross@heartlandfilm.org).

How do I become a Heartland Film Member?

Members receive benefits that include discounts on tickets and fest passes, exclusive invitations to advance screenings during the year, discounts on festival merch, and more! Click here to learn more about our membership levels and join the Heartland Film family.

How do I become a volunteer?

Our festivals wouldn’t be possible without volunteers! Volunteering is a great way to contribute to Heartland Film, make new friends, and be part of a fun, exciting film festival environment. Though HIFF 2021 is a different format from years past, we still have volunteer opportunities available. You can also still sign up for our database so you can be alerted to future opportunities for Indy Shorts (July 2022) and year-round. Visit heartlandfilm.org/volunteer for more info and to join our family! If you have any questions, please email Volunteer Coordinator Julie Landrum at jlandrum@heartlandfilm.org.

How can I get daily updates and important information about the festival?

If you want to receive important festival updates and info leading up to and during HIFF, be sure to sign up for our email newsletter by checking the "sign up for the newsletter" box when you purchase a ticket or fest pass. During the festival, the newsletter is daily, and the rest of the year it is monthly. You can also follow us on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.

In- Person Festival FAQ

What COVID protocols will you be following?

In accordance with venue requirements and local guidelines, all attendees will be required to wear a mask indoors except when eating or drinking. Guests will not be able to enter theaters without a mask. Most venues will have assigned seating, but there are no physical distancing restraints at this time. Our goal is to keep all staff, volunteers, and patrons safe. We appreciate your cooperation.
